Easy set up, very flexible configuration, great for my well heat lamp
I needed to put a ceramic heat lamp in my well to keep it from freezing when the temps dropped into teens and single digits. The simplest solution to provide power to that lamp during the few months of the year when it’s needed was to run a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord from a GFI outlet on my covered porch to the lamp. The thing is, it only needed to run during the night–temps got up enough during the day that it didn’t have to be on.The TP-Link Tapo P400 was the perfect match for what I needed. The Tapo plug is very sturdy, very well-built with good covers over the outlets. It’s IP65 rated, so it’s good for outdoor use–but you don’t want to leave it fully out in the rain on or the ground. It has 2 outlets, each of which has its own manual on/off switch and each of which can be configured using the Tapo app (more on that below). It’s also capable of handling a nice load — 1800W / 15A / 1/2hp motor.Setup using TP-Link’s Tapo app was quick and simple. Just install the Tapo app, plug in the outlet, and follow the prompts. You can set up a schedule with multiple turn on/off events at specific times on specific days–I can see how that can be useful for a variety of situations. The fact that the plug has 2 outlets which can be scheduled independently makes that even more useful. One thing that’s especially nice for my specific situation is that you can set on/off events based on the sunset and sunrise. For example, if I know it won’t be cold enough to need the lamp until at least an hour after sunset, I can tell it to turn on an hour after sunset…and the Tapo app will use my location to adjust the time accordingly. Same for sunrise. You can tune that to a very fine degree–a number of hours and minutes before or after either sunrise or sunset. That would also be a great thing to have if you wanted to turn lights on and off. Another thing that’s useful is that I can connect the unit to the TP-Link remote server so that I can turn the outlets on and off when I’m away from home.I’m very pleased with this, exactly what I needed!

Use the Tapo app to set up
I’m a long time TP-Link fan for my smart home light switches and plugs. Their Kasa app is EXCELLENT and provides a single source for the dozen or so electrical devices I have in my home. I love the ease with which I can program on and off times, place certain lights to turn on randomly when I am away on vacation or turn on, say, 15 minutes after sunset. I find it far easier to operate that Google Home or Amazon Alexa, though my TP-Link devices work well with those two.I purchased this new Tapo device to control some outdoor patio lights and thought that I could install it with Kasa. Nope – it doesn’t even show up as a usable device. So I installed Tapo on my phone and it installed easily. Along with the new outdoor plug – which works great, my other older TP-Link devices showed up too. However…. they all showed up as accesible via my Wi-Fi, meaning that I would not be able to control them if I was away from home. There is a solution to get Tapo to work older devices, so contact Support to make this happen for you.

Easy to use, download app for Apple users
Connected our deck lighting system to this device. A previous device worked only with Android devices, and eventually crapped out after a year. The app downloaded easily and started working immediately, pairing with my phone using Bluetooth. You can program it to go on and off at selected times or just use the app to turn one or two of the dual connections on and off. You can also use one of two buttons on the device to override.

This plug was very easy to set up and connect to my Alexa app. It appears to be very sturdy. Love that I can now control my outdoor christmas lights from my phone.

Nice move to an advanced age!
We have had outdoor Christmas lights for many years, but they have been plugged into a dusk-to-dawn plug that had various settings. It has worked well, but we’ve had a few issues; there were two plugs on different sides of the house, and the sensors would detect the “it’s dark enough to turn on” at different times (but we were willing to live with it). However, one of our plugs was started to fail (it would not turn on – it’s as if the sensor was broken, but it started to work the next day). In any event, we decided to go with more modern technology by using a programmable plug. The app was easy to run – adding the plug was easy, and the current firmware allows one to set minutes BEFORE or AFTER sunrise/sunset, as well as absolute times. We only had it a few days, but it is working just fine.Hopefully, there will be no longevity issues.

Product failed after 3 months and Customer Service will not return calls
This is the second one I have purchased after the first one failed after 9 months. I figured that first failure was just an off device. Purchased a new one in Aug 2024 and it failed again Oct 2024. Both outlets are connected to my Google Home and both show power is on to the device. Additionally, the manual switches on the device show power is on to each plug but only one plug will work and the other will not function. This is exactly what happened to the first one that failed. I reached out to their Customer Service phone support and they had a long hold and at about 10 min said I could get in a que and they would call me back. That was 3 days ago. I will not buy another of these and waste my money on garbage. And just to be clear, i have many other TP Link switches in my house that all work smoothly and it is only this device that has failed twice.
