Perfect for wildlife, sports, travel and more, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is a compact, lightweight telephoto lens for EOS R Series cameras, offering a versatile zoom range that brings subjects closer with ease. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is similar in size to the EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens, but not only reaches to 400mm, but also has fast Nano USM focusing and up to 6 stops of Coordinated IS when used in combination with an EOS R series camera featuring In-body Image Stabilization like the EOS R5 and EOS R6, or 5.5 stops with an EOS R/RP camera. Using a single Ultra Low Dispersion lens element towards the front of the lens group corrects chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, making your images look crisp and colorful with minimal color blur. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens can also accept both the RF1.4x and RF2x tele extenders giving you the effective maximum focal length of 560mm and 800mm respectively. With a control ring that allows for quick setting changes, including shutter speed and aperture, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens puts quality, convenience and control in your hands.

Great lens at a reasonable price.
Took this on vacation recently. While it’s a little bulky (expected), it’s lightweight, easy to use, works great. The image quality, image stabilization, and both auto-focus and manual focus are excellent. Everything works smoothly. Great option for any of Canon’s APS-C mirrorless R series cameras. I believe it works on the full-frame versions too, but with a cropped image size since it’s designed for the APS-C models.

5 stars!
This lens is really great at this price point. It is light weight and sharp. Paired with a crop sensor camera body, it gives an effective focal length of 640mm. Its small size and light weight make it a great travel lens. In my experience, it focuses much faster than similar third-party lenses. Don’t think twice about getting this lens, just do it!

Sharp
Love this lens. I continue to be amazed by the quality of Canon glass, even at this price level. Images are indistinguishable from my L lenses. Is it long enough? Not sure yet, but quality-wise it’s a great fit.

The RF100-400 Zoom Is Lightweight-Compact-Sharp
The RF100-400 Zoom is a great performing telephoto zoom. It does everything well for a modest price. It focuses very fast. It handles very well. Its plastic construction keeps the weight down. The lens produces super sharp images that rival Canon âLâ zoom lenses. Drop a plastic lens on concrete and it is trashed. Drop a Canon âLâ lens on concrete it will be trashed too.

Long reach and light weight
I bought this lens to go with my new Canon R7. Or maybe I bought the R7 to go with this lens? I really wanted a lighter weight lens and camera for carrying with me when hiking or birding. My 6d / 100-400mm F4-5.6 IS L (Mark 1) was too heavy to carry around my neck for hours. I got a Sony RX10 mark IV bridge camera which was a great size and weight, but the picture quality was not as good as I wanted. This lens and body combo is hopefully the answer to my problems.
The lens itself is pretty impressive in terms of its length and weight. Sure, I wish it were shorter, but for 400mm, I can’t really complain. I also wish it had a wider aperture, but for the lower price and weight, that is obviously the compromise you have to make. The sensor noise performance of the R7 eliminates some of the downside of the slow lens, but it can’t help create the nice background blur that a fast lens will have.
The image stabilization combo of the lens and body works exceptionally well. I have been getting sharp shots at 400mm with 1/250s handheld with my shaky hands. Images look crisp to me and autofocus is very fast and quiet.
One thing I have not gotten used to is the zoom ring works backwards from every other lens I have. Maybe someday I will get used to it, but for now, every time I try to use it I start with rotating it the wrong way. On the plus side, there is no zoom creep when I am walking around with this lens around my neck. There is a lock where you can fix it at 100mm, but I have never had to use it.
I am a little disappointed there is no weather sealing on this lens. I’d have paid a little more to have some basic weather sealing on it as I don’t want to have to worry about using it in mist or rain.
I’m not taking any stars off for those items that disappoint me about this lens as they are either compromises for size and weight, or were known limitations when I bought the lens and not a surprise. Overall, 5 stars as I am very happy carrying this lens around for hours taking bird photos.

Slow, not good for low light. Still great.
Use this on an r5, pretty slow to autofocus, poor light visibility. However I would recommend it based on the price, I think itâs a good value. It is really sharp when you have good weather and the picture quality is comparable to higher cost versions. The build quality isnât the best, itâs plastic and not weather protected but because of it it is really light so youâll be more likely to bring it with you. And the price too may make you less worried about when to use it..
itâs a good functional part of your kit and it can be fun to zoom around that much and see wildlife closer

Lightweight and Works.
Just received this today and pleased so far. Had a chance for few photos on a very overcast day. Used on a R10 and pleased. Quick focus and good image quality. Good buy. Editing after having for several days, the IS on this lens is fantastic.

Great telephoto lens for less!
This Canon RF lens may not have the fancy red stripe or the lowest aperture but it takes fantastic photos. I have used it for everything from light macro to tracked astrophotography and it performs well for what it is. Images are very crisp and I don’t hear the autofocus operating. As an OEM lens the fit with to the RF body is perfect.

I use a canon R5 and all my lenses are L lenses only , but I bought this for my jungle safari coming soon . Tested this out today and I and pleased to say that itâs quite good. It sometimes struggles to find focus but most of the time itâs accurate. Itâs light as compare to my rf 28-70 f2 . And I like the image quality
