How does this vpn replace a vpn service? Is the pre-installed as secure as a paid vpn service?

The router can NOT replace the VPN service. You still need to pay the VPN service providers to get the VPN service.

Can it in repeater mode connect with a hotel wifi that uses a web page for access to it’s network?

Yes, you could connect to the public or hotels’ WiFi.

Compact, Powerful, and Easy to Use—Highly Recommend!
I’ve been using the GL SFT1200 router for a bit now, and I have to say, I’m seriously impressed. From the moment I unboxed it, it was almost a plug-and-play setup. I had it up and running within minutes, and accessing the admin control panel through the web interface was a breeze. If you’re not super tech-savvy, don’t worry—it’s incredibly user-friendly. You won’t get lost in the process of setting it up.What really makes this router stand out is the sheer number of settings and configurations you can play around with. It’s packed with customization options that let you fine-tune your network just the way you want it. Whether it’s setting up a guest network, parental controls, or VPN configurations, it’s all here. I haven’t seen this much flexibility in other routers I’ve used in the past. It’s perfect if you love to tinker with settings.Despite its small size, this router is a beast. It’s surprisingly powerful for something so compact, and it handles multiple devices with ease. Streaming, gaming, and working from home haven’t posed any issues. One thing to note, though—it does run a little warm, but nothing that seems to affect performance. I’ve read other reviews mentioning this too, so it seems pretty normal. The range and signal strength are impressive considering the size, and the portability factor is another big plus. You can easily take this with you if you need a strong, secure connection while traveling. In short, if you’re looking for a router that’s powerful, customizable, and super easy to set up, I highly recommend the GL SFT1200. It’s got everything you’d want in a router, plus some features you might not even know you needed until you have one.

Just what I needed for setting up a small LAN on my boat
I always like seeing someone filling a small niche market with a quality product at a good price. Seems these little routers are popular with road warriors and RVers, and I’ll spread the word to sailors that they are just the ticket for setting up an onboard LAN, either wired or wireless. For me, the ability to cast the plotter image from my navigational computer below deck to a phone or tablet in the cockpit using VNC is the main draw. The thing that makes the Opal worth buying instead of an older Linksys WRT is that it runs off a powered USB port, of which I have plenty on the boat. No fooling around with cutting off a brick and wiring in a DC to DC converter to get power from the onboard 12 volt system to the router. I would add that the small form factor is a plus, and the clearly written instructions make setup easy. When in port, the router can function as a WiFi repeater and firewall to make WAN to LAN easy and safe. For the price, this little piece of kit is a no-brainer.

    Handy, hackable travel device
Overall this is a handy device and an awesome value for the price. The hardware is lightweight, compact, and very easy to travel with. I bought the device primary to use as a travel NAS device, as I had loaded up multimedia on a 5TB USB hard drive that I wanted to share across multiple devices (tablets, phones, VR headset, etc.). It’s impressive that this device is so configurable, virtually as comprehensive as my much more expensive Netgear Orbi home network gear. You need to be technically savvy in order to get the most of out of this device, though. As an engineer I actually think that it’s pretty cool that this little $35 device has Open WRT installed, has SSH access, and has a whole bunch of settings you can tweak to exactly configure this router for your home or travel network. But I wouldn’t buy this expecting complete plug-and-play usability except for the most basic features (sharing an internet connection). If you are technically adept and patient this won’t be an issue, just be forewarned.NOTE that many of the advertised features are only available in the 3.x version of the firmware, such as file sharing and DLNA support. The router comes shipped with the 4.x version, which according the GL.iNet forums, had many of the features removed in the 4.x release in order to preserve disk space. So you will actually need to downgrade the device in order to get back the preinstalled functionality restored. The good news is that the user forums are actually quite active and the company and other users have been very responsive in answering various technical support questions. Technically, some of the removed functionality can be reinstalled on the 4.x firmware, but after some experimentation I could never get it quite right, so I decided that the downgrade route was a better option. On 3.x, the device works flawlessly and handily supported my use case with zero issues – it mounted the 5TB HDD fine, provided it enough power, and the SAMBA file sharing support was very stable.

If you’re interested in networking, it’s fun to have one of these around just to play with, let alone the benefits it offers if you travel often. It runs OpenWRT behind the scenes with a nice, custom GUI overtop. Not only can it act as a Wi-Fi repeater, it can go from Wi-Fi to ethernet, ethernet to Wi-Fi, and act as a small switch. It has built in support for multiple VPN types, including Wireguard, which is by far the best protocol these days. It’s very fast and easy to set up, with connecting to the Wireguard peers happening very quickly after activation. You can set the switch on the side to do all sorts of things, including turning your VPN on/off. It also has built-in support for Tor, so you can have a separate Wi-Fi network connected to Tor if you want. You can also directly access the OpenWRT GUI behind the scenes, and you can install all sorts of different networking software packages. I’ve barely tapped into the stuff this thing can accomplish, and I’m already very satisfied with the price. I think if you want to install a lot of the software, you’d maybe want to find one that has more Flash built-in, but even this model has enough to install and play around with quite a bit. You can SSH in and get access to the Linux system running everything, which is oodles of fun and just begging to be customized. If you just want to play around with networking without messing with your main access point or router, this is a great device for that. If you travel often, you can easily set up a Wireguard peer on your home network which you can then connect to from anywhere in the world, allowing full access to your home network devices and also encrypting your traffic when using untrusted WiFi or LTE/5G. With an external USB LTE/5G modem, it can also connect to the internet that way, but you can also tether your phone to it and still route all your traffic through the VPN. Every businessperson who travels and stays in hotels should have one of these.

  8. GREEN GHOST TECH REVIEWS

I recently purchased this unit, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed with its performance and features. As someone who values flexibility and control in their network setup, this device is truly a powerhouse. It’s not just your average router—it’s packed with advanced capabilities that make it perfect for tech enthusiasts and professionals alike. Why I Like This Unit:One of the standout features for me is its OpenVPN access, which allows for secure and private browsing. Setting up OpenVPN is incredibly straightforward, and it works seamlessly, giving me peace of mind when using my network across various devices.Additionally, I love the ability to install apps like Docker using Luci, which is part of the OpenWRT backbone. OpenWRT provides a level of customization and control that’s hard to find in most consumer-grade routers. With Luci’s web interface, it’s easy to manage and install a wide range of apps and services. I’ve been able to set up Docker containers and manage them directly on the device, which opens up so many possibilities for automation, networking, and even running lightweight server tasks.Pros:- OpenVPN access for secure browsing and remote access- OpenWRT-based, giving full control over network settings and software- Luci interface makes app installations like Docker easy and user-friendly- Excellent Wi-Fi range and solid overall performance- Compact design with reliable heat management- Great value for the amount of advanced features it offersCons:- May have a slight learning curve for beginners not familiar with OpenWRT or Luci- Initial setup can take a bit longer due to the extensive customization options- USB ports could benefit from faster speeds, but they are adequate for most usesConclusion:In summary, this unit is an absolute gem for anyone looking for more than just a simple router. The combination of OpenVPN support and OpenWRT’s flexibility really sets it apart from the competition. The ability to install apps like Docker through the Luci interface opens up a world of possibilities, making this device much more than a router—it’s a highly customizable network hub. While there may be a slight learning curve for those unfamiliar with OpenWRT, once you get the hang of it, the potential is endless. The pros far outweigh the minor cons, and for the price, you’re getting an incredible amount of features that are typically only found in much more expensive devices. Highly recommended for anyone looking to take control of their home or office network!
