Thread technology
What is Thread, and why is it important to Matter and the smart home?
Thread is a wireless protocol specifically built for IoT devices. It’s designed to make them work faster, have fewer points of failure, use less power, and communicate with each other more seamlessly.
A low-power, low-bandwidth mesh networking protocol that uses the 802.15.4 radio technology, Thread is similar to existing smart home protocols Zigbee and Z-Wave. But unlike them, it doesn’t need a central hub or bridge. Instead, Thread devices can talk directly to each other. By cutting out the middle man, Thread can be faster, especially over large networks.
One of benefits of using Thread devices is that you will have fewer devices using your WIFI network. Also, if one device in your Thread network fails, another device will step up and fill in the roles of the failed device. This is the self-healing feature of Thread.

TS808 –
Work as advertised
Zero issues. All of them paired first time and have stayed connected. Quick response in HomeKit. Range seems good.
W Chin –
Works well with HomeKit and easy to set up
Unlike the Belkin WEMO version, this device reacts quickly and so far, stays online all the time. About comparable to the EVE version for much cheaper.
Joseph Catalano –
Get what you pay for
These are inexpensive and they were one of the first to support Thread. But theyâre incredibly unreliable. Constantly losing connection and often they just turn off (I have a few devices that should be always on but I added these for convenient power cycling). Iâve had these a full year almost and not one firmware update to address the connectivity problems. And I have 3 AppleTVs, several HomePod minis, a Nest Hub Max spread throughout the house so thereâs no reason these should have any difficulty staying connected to the Thread network.

Quick and easy
Matter enabled me to quickly connect the smart receptacles to the network within 60 seconds. These new receptacles allowed me also delete a third party app on my smartphone and the connection to Alexa. Very happy being able to activate IoT devices with Matter using Alexa only.

Doesn’t work with iphones 13pro
I was setting these up to use for Christmas lights. I could not install them with my iPhone 13 pro. So my nephew tried his iPhone 15. He could get them all set up and they operate with his phone, but they will not work with my iPhone 13pro. Unfortunately I purchased it in July so I can’t return it.

Quality is a concern
So far they do use thread and are fast, only 3 of the 4 that arrived worked.
Bob B –
Excellent so far
Iâve had these for 1 month and have had no issues, unlike my wemo plugs (WSP100) that I routinely have to power cycle.
Steve C. –
So easy to set up
I just purchased an Apple TV and using the Home App I easily set up the Onvis Smart Plugs to turn on and off my table lights in several rooms. It all was so easy to set up.
