Excellent Performance, Powerful Product
We use this in an enterprise production environment. For non IT people, that’s the term when you use this in a live business environment where downtime is costly. This small inexpensive unit comes with RouterOS which gives you enterprise grade features but at a very low price. Our application for this unit was to provide two subnets to separate groups of employees at a satellite office. Because it’s full RouterOS, you can do other things like multiple WAN (internet) failover setups, etc. Mikrotik has become a go-to piece for us when we need to reduce costs. These also have been rock solid reliable.

Gigabit throughput Confirmed Working!
I purchased this after upgrading my 75Mbps Comcast service to 1Gbps. My Sonicwall NSA220 could not handle the 1Gbps throughput. Was getting around 250Mbps max with the Sonicwall. So I went on a venture to find a cheap solution. The Comcast cable modem rental box that was given, was very basic. I could not change DNS, etc. So I returned the Comcast monthly rental. Purchased my own Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, and this Mircotik Gigabit router. Worked like a charm! I now have gigabit speeds, and no longer paying Comcast monthly rental fees to service my Comcast modem. I suspect I will recoup all my cost in 1.5 years.(PROS)- Cheaper then a Sonicwall TZ500 (MSRP $1,200)- Did I mention how inexpensive! LOL- Getting Gigabit speeds with basic setup, a few NATs and DDNS setup!- Small footprint size.- Fast boot times.- Has a quick setup for very basic setup, for non IT people.- Built in DDNS like service, for dynamic public IPs, that have a need to check security cameras, NAS boxes, servers, VPN, etc. Eliminating the need for dyndns.org, no-ip.org etc.. Reminds me of Synology quickid service, etc.- 5 port gigabit switch. I used port 1 as Comcast WAN Input, and the remaining 4 as LAN.- I did all my config and management via web browser at 192.168.88.1. i.e. I did not download and use the winbox config software.(CONS)- Interface OS is not as polished as Sonic OS, but works. But I am biased.- Not as many interfaces as a Sonicwall TZ500.- Interface / OS requires IT knowledge. Basic End user, like my mom, wife, kids, grandparents, etc.. would NEVER be able to figure it out.- I, as an enterprise certified Sonicwall Systems Engineer, had to watch youtube videos on how to create hairpin destination NATs, etc. Its just not as obvious. Or you have to get to know where to find things, and how their OS works, but its manageable, once you get to know their layout and methods.- The power adapter is a basic barrel plug into the Microtik Router. Power cable has fallen out a few times, while moving the router around. It is fine if left untouched. Just wish they would have added some type of quick release power connection, as the majority of these devices do.

Worked great
Easy to use. Not WiFi dependent. Used for a stand alone network without needing isp/dns servers. Great stuff for great price. Very useful user interface for any job

Great Router for home use
My old Ubiquity X router was topping out at around 400mbps and I have 500mb service, so I bought this MikroTik and am getting full speed. Very happy with it. For most situations you can just plug your cable modem into port zero of this device and get four gig ports out with DHCP, and everything will work right out of the box. This assumes you have no static IP devices definen on your network. One caveat – if you change the router’s IP from 192.168.88.1 to something else (like 192.168.1.1), and you are using DHCP, you need to go into the WebFig/DHCP Server tab, click on the line, and change the DNS address to the new router address. Not sure why this does not change with the router IP change.

What a great wired router
I had a few goals: decouple my home wireless access point from my router, add IPv6 support, be able to support and route ~1 Gbps internet speeds. Hex S did all that. As an experienced home user, RouterOS offers all the advanced router features to geek out to. WinBox and the mobile app, along with Kid Control, offer all the practical features you’d expect from a fancy, expensive, dummy-proof router. I can assign devices to each of my 3 kids, and set internet access hours for each, and manually enable/disable access from the mobile app adhoc.I demoted my old E3000 router to a wifi access point (802.11ac) for the Hex S, which will allow me to separately upgrade to an 802.11ax access point(s) of my choice, and/or add additional APs to expand coverage. While the learning curve is steep, it’s not prohibitive. There’s tons of flexibility, and a VERY robust Mikrotik community. Since both enterprise grade hardware, and home hardware like Hex S use the same RouterOS the user base is large.

Great Router, Not too difficult for a beginner
Iâm a college student who needed to set up a simple home network for a rental house. I paired this router with a tp-link omada EAP and it works perfectly. It took two afternoons of fiddling, but with the help of youtube videos I was able to set up multiple VLAN networks associated with different ssidâs on the access point, as well as a simple firewall and a pihole dns server for the house. Overall, Iâm very pleased. This was my first time setting up a home network, and I was able to manage with the help of the internet and some very basic networking knowledge. Overall I liked how configurable the router is, even if itâs a little overwhelming at first. Itâs also very well priced and looks cool compared to the usual cheap plastic look of most consumer routers.

I have 25+ years in the IT industry and Mikrotik’s RouterOS is truly an enterprise-grade solution, but for a fraction of the cost of the big names that most people are used to in North America. This router contains features that are overkill for most home/SMB users, but it’s still nice to have those options. This router absolutely destroys the Ubiquiti Edgerouter in every area if you are considering it (I have both). The only thing I don’t like is the fact that the case of this particular router is plastic instead of metal.

This is a very powerful router with enterprise-class features, but you will need some knowledge of network protocols and terminology to get it working. Using the built-in RouterOS, all the features that the hardware supports are enabled without any further licences (hello netgear?) and the breath of configurability is very impressive. There are some very welcome quality-of-life enhancements, such as WinBox, the configuration utility, connects to the router using its MAC address, so even if you screw up the IP routing you can still connect and fix it. Brilliant! It also has a web interface and an SSH terminal if you prefer those options. Indeed RouterOS can be configured entirely from the command line and supports scripts just like linux (on which it is based), the possibilites are endless. You can separate the ports into their own networks, with a DHCP server on each, VLANs, bridges, MPLS, queuing, QoS, Dot1x – it’s all here. I’m using it to terminate my 500Mbps FTTH service which is supplied on a VLAN, and the firewall and logging are worth it alone. The one caveat I would highlight is that this device is not suitable for the average punter, you really need to be IT savvy to get the best from it (or to just get it working!), but if you know your stuff the sky is the limit. Also, becuase the OS is common to all the routers, if I need to upgrade in the future, I will already know the interface.
