Great Product! …….a few smaller problems (that are more aggravating then problems)
I waited a while to write a Review as a product such as this can’t be reviewed without using it for a while. I have used “No Bark Collars” off and on several different times over the years, also different brands. I have not been happy with them as you have no control over when, or when not to give a correction. I found they discouraged barking, but also discouraged every type of barking, and in fact discouraged “alert” barking the most. I also found that almost all the dogs I used it on figured out how it worked, and could bark anyway.I have a nice Rottweiler who had 2 major problems, not listening, and barking / whining all the time, at nothing. It didn’t matter if she was inside or outside. I’ve done a lot of training, showing, competitive Obedience, guard work, tracking, CGC, ect… I have never worked with a dog like this. I finally made the decision that if her manners could not be changed for the better, I would sell her as a pet and she would be spayed. I decided a training collar would be the best at this time, but I wanted it mainly for corrections. At the time I was using No Bark collars, Electronic Traing collars with more control were quite expensive (I’m sure some still are). When I found there were quite a few that were very reasonable, I was very surprised, as well as suspicious. After some research, I bought the Petrainer PET998DBB1 Dog Shock Collar by Tri- Tronics. I was impressed by the light weight and size, but if I could change anything I would change the plastic collar to something with more strength and longevity. For a large Breed, Rottweiler, Shepherd, Doberman, ect… this collar will not hold up for long. After only a few days my Rottie had scratched at it enough to get the collar off. I made some adjustments and she has not done so since, but it is something to be watched by people especially if they have a large breed. As far as the collar itself, I was very pleased. Teaching a dog to bark only when they should is not easy. Most people tell their dogs “No”, “Quiet”, “Enough”… thinking of it as a form of correction, which in fact encourages the dog to bark more. By giving verbal commands or some type of physical response, you’re doing just what your dog wants, giving them attention. If you use this system, not making any noise or response, the collar interrupts their cycle. Again I found that the switch that changes the channel between 2 dogs can be aggravating and can accidentally be hit. Several times I thought it wasn’t working until I found out it was on the wrong channel. I also found that the posts on the collar when you first get it are the smallest ones that come with the collar. These may work fine with smaller dogs, or dogs with no, or very little, undercoat, for the most part most dogs with underoats and large dogs would need at least the mid-size posts, and because I have none of the large Breeds with thick underoats and /or long hair, even using the long posts, it’s hard to give any information as to its’ effectiveness. Most people don’t realize that Rotties, Labs, Mastiffs, and a lot of other shorthair dogs have fairly heavy undercoats. I do not use the collar all the time, and it’s always bothered me that the directions state the collars must be very tight to work. I put the long posts on for my Rottie, and then put the collar on more like a regular collar. After thinking about it, I realized it really made no difference where the receiver (the part on the collar that gives the correction) was, as long as they felt the correction (I found the beep was non-existing on my collar) it had the desired effect. Collars that had to be tight and under their jaw area, had to be so because it is the vibration of their barking that regulates when the collars work, and when they stop. You do have to understand that positioning, tightness of collar, post lengths (make sure to check the length of the posts that come on the receiver before you complain that it doesn’t work) and if you have the right channel on (I set all the correction levels on the second channel, as long as I’m using it for only one dog, on 0 so when I look at the vibrate or shock levels if it says 0 I know I’m on the wrong channel). Another biggie, make sure the receiver is on when on your dog (there is a green light that blinks every 20 seconds or so) and is turned off when not on your dog. When there’s no light, there’s no power getting to it.One thing I found I agreed with a lot of other complaints, was the fact the batteries did not hold a charge long. For me this wasn’t a real problem, it was more of an inconvenience. After reading other reviews it sounded like people were leaving the collars on all the time, using the wrong channel, leaving the receivers on when they took the collars off (I don’t think some people realize that the collars are on, unless shut off, even when not on the dog), and people must charge the transmitter (the control you hold) as well as the receiver. What I do is every other night I charge both the transmitter and the receiver. The double plug at the end was a great idea! It allows me to plug both in at the same time. All and all I would recommend this collar to anyone who understands how to use it correctly. It has worked well for the reason I bought it, and far better then any stand alone No Bark collar I’ve ever used. Unbelievably nice system for the money. I’m glad I took the chance and bought itOnly problems I found (and they’re not really problems) The directions could be a little clearer (and bigger print for those with vision problems) the collar should be a little more rugged, like nylon or something, and would somehow make the ability to change channels so it can’t be done accidentally.

    Excellent training device!!
Our dog is 6 years old and we tried our best on our own to keep her from running after other dogs when she would see them. She is nice and just wanted to smell, but you can imagine other owners seeing a 75lb dog running towards them and their dog, I wouldn’t be happy either. She is a great dog otherwise, doesn’t run off, always comes when called… until she sees other dogs anyway, does everything you ask, but we could just not get her to break her running to other dogs behavior. We had looked at shock collars when we first got her as a puppy, but they were so expensive, and we thought we’d train her just like we have all our other dogs. But as the years went on, we could not correct that behavior. Finally last year we were going camping with a few of our friends and their would be 10 dogs in total on the camping trip. We decided to buy this shock collar to see if it would help manage her on the trip. Taking her over to the field by our house the first night we bought it, no one was around of course… until just about the time we were going to leave. Sure enough, you can see her posture… and you can’t break her stare.. no matter what you say at that point, she’s going to run to them. Having just received the collar, admittedly, I didn’t read through the instructions very well, I left the small electrodes on and didn’t have the collar on as tight as it should have been. She bolted and I tried zapping her, nothing, I kept turning up the level and hitting the button, nothing, she finally reached the fence where the dog and people were and I had cranked it up to 100 and hit the button and BAM! She reacted and immediately ran right back! My wife and I couldn’t believe it! So upon reading the directions and realizing my failures of properly installing it, we took her over the next night just waiting for the same scenario, and it did come.. we couldn’t believe it!! She just stood there looking at the dog and people, didn’t even take a step towards them. We didn’t even have to use the device. We went on the that camping trip and she ended up being the best dog on the trip! All the other dogs would wander off, run through other camps, run off into the woods, we just had to call her and she cam right to us. AMAZING! She didn’t run to other dogs, didn’t do anything to get in trouble. All from that first and only shock. We use the collar every time we walk her and only use the vibrate mode, but she is a completely different, WELL BEHAVED dog. This collar is rechargeable, has different settings for sound, vibrate, shock and even has a little light on the hand held for a flash light. We really didn’t have a lot of expectations considering how cheap the price is for this collar, but it was worth every single penny and I would have easily paid more. We have lent our collar to friends who used it with great results and referred the collar to other friends who have also bought it and had great results. You can’t beat this price and it is a great collar to help with your dogs behavior.

Excellent product of good quality at a far FAR better price than what.you get in the big name pet food places everyone goes to. Mine has lasted through training to dogs back to back. Easy to use very good range, collar itself is slightly on the cheap side but hasn’t broken yet and can be swapped for your own. Battery lasts very well and doesn’t need to be charged every day or even every second or third day. The vibrating feature works amazing and can be set very very low to easily high enough to grab the dogs attention and saved me from ever requiring the more aggressive attention grabbing feature. (Which is fully adjustable too). It has a light that you can activate when your dog sneaks off into dark corners just to stress you out when walking at night too which is very handy. Yes..I’d recommend this to anyone without hesitation.

Terrific training tool! Before I bought this, and watched the training videos on youtube, I was dead set against this kind of collar. But boy, have I changed my mind! There are beep, vibration and ‘shock’ options, with so many levels that there is no excuse to hurt your dog at all. My dog has never even given a tiny yelp, even the few times I’ve used it on other than vibration. It’s more like a tap on the shoulder to him, and he looks around to see how I’m doing that from afar! LOL! He reacted much more negatively to the wireless fencer that I tried for a while. The only thing I would caution is that you be sure you haven’t accidentally touched the button for the second collar, because then your dog’s collar won’t work. Happened to me twice and I thought the batteries were useless. Not so. They are just fine when I have it set to the collar we’re using. It’s only been about 10 days since I started using this collar, and my dog doesn’t even need it now. He comes running, tail wagging in the air, as soon as I call him.

This can be used properly with respect for your animal to stop them from leaving your yard or fenced kn area, the shock is powerfull and you only need to use it once or twice to set the perameters of the yard if you use it correctly. This product saved me from having to get rid of my family dog. So I am glad it exisists also you can train your dog to go on walks off leash in appropriate areas with it. It gives them a lot of freedom they love it

The product works well but there are several design features that are problematic:1) The automatic timeout of the transmitter is both unnecessary and a potential source of command failure. I use only the buzz function and use it to disrupt my dog’s behaviour as she has developed a “play” habit of unexpectedly body slamming me (she weighs 77 pounds) and quickly biting my arms. This is not aggression but mimics the roughhousing play she exhibits with Maddy, who is the same age (17 months) and also a Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever cross. For this it works perfectly but when in timeout requires two presses of the “Y” button to bring it to life and then send the command. This is a distinct issue when the collar is used to break or interrupt an undesirable behaviour.2) The transmitter can easily be inadvertently set to the two collar mode, which will not allow it to control the single collar.3) The power settings for the shock and vibrate modes can, when set to both high and low levels, “roll through” the 0-100 gap with a single button press or a few multiple presses, resulting in unexpectedly dramatically changing the setting when intentionally or accidentally rocking the level control. I NEVER use the static shock function and hence set the shock level to 10 (which the dog will not feel) in order to reduce the likelihood of accidentally selecting shock and actually shocking her.4) Basically the transmitter exhibits a very common fault – it is over-engineered and tries to pack too many functions into what should be a simple and reliable (operationally) device. My husband is a retired television and radio engineering executive and is constantly critical of this increasingly common failure by designers and manufacturers. His refrain of “I’d like to meet the S.O.B who designed this” is almost inevitable with everything from this E-collar through DVD players to car controls and domestic appliances.Sincerely,Joan Barton, Canada (hence the spelling)
