Great solution to avoid bulky switched plugs
I wanted to get rid of these home automation plugs that stick out the wall. This was the best solution. Very easy to install and setup. Now I can turn all normal lights on and off with automation or push of a button on my phone. Plus the outlets have a button as well. Additional pro is you see how much power was used. Also great to program a routine to know when your dishwasher, washing machine or dryer is done. As soon the app notices no more power draw it notifies me. Great quality.

Great technology
Easy installation. Connected flawlessly, no problems. Love the individual outlet control. Loved the power usage monitor. Integrated seamlessly with my Google smart home. Only thing would make them better if they had built in surge protection or were GFCI. Almost endless usage applications.

Not as Good as Kasa Products
I have purchased a variety of TP-Link products for home automation. I specifically like the Apple HomeKit enabled products. The light switches and plugs that Iâve purchased have allowed me to edit schedules and settings in the Kasa app while using on/off features with HomeKit. Iâve never had issues using both systems to run the devices. This outlet has been different. First, I ran into lots of connection issues and had to reset my router to even get the device to open on my phone. Then it only paired to the Tapo app and not the HomeKit app. I reset the device and paired it with HomeKit and then reconnected it with Tapo and now HomeKit canât find it again. It seems as if you can o ly connect to one or the other and not both. I was able to connect Kasa and HomeKit but adding in a Tapo device is throwing everything off and it is frustrating.Iâm hopeful that this will all work out but Iâm wondering if I shouldâve just stuck with the Kasa plugs and not tried the Tapo device.I have heard Kasa is being discontinued and my difficulty with Tapo isnât inspiring confidence but TP-Link has proven most reliable. Just be warned if you use an iPhone and want to control this through HomeKit with other brands and devices, but are hoping to use the energy tracker and other features found in the Tapo app.

A good smart outlet
I have a bike shop on the back of my garage that I like to keep comfortable when Iâm in it, so I have a window unit AC for the summer as well as a small space heater for winter. I installed this TP-Link Tape Smart Plug Wi-Fi outlet in my shop to automate the two devices. The outlet is rated for 15A and is tamper resistant. It is Matter compatible and works with the two smart systems I use, Samsung SmartThings and Amazon Alexa. It has side loading plate clamps for the hot, neutral and ground conductors. It also comes with a screw-less cover plate. Each of the two outlets can be controlled independently via the smart device capability as well as from the two buttons on the face. Each of the buttons has an integrated LED that flashes orange when not connected, changing to flashing green when setting up. After setup, the buttons illuminate solid green when the associated outlet is on and extinguished when off. When connected to my SmartThings hub, it appears as two completely separate devices. The energy monitoring feature is not visible in the SmartThings iOS app version 1.7.25 that I have.I experienced a minor issue during installation. The screws for the electrical connections did not have any type of stop to prevent them from backing all the way out. When I started loosening the screws I anticipated that the stops would engage to prevent the screw from falling out, but instead the screw and its plate fell on the floor. The screws are just barely long enough to stay connected while still allowing the plate to open wide enough to insert 12 gauge conductors. This screw falling out issue occurred more than once. When adding the device to SmartThings I encountered an issue as well. I used the âscan nearbyâ capability of the SmartThings hub to find the device. The hub found it and seemed to be processing toward the finish, but then a pop-up insisted that I scan a QR code. I found a sticker in the package to complete the setup. Wondering if that was a one-time issue, I tried it multiple times and every time, the QR code had to be scanned or else the add failed. This means that if I ever need to re-add the device in the future, I am going to need that QR code again. I had to place the sticker on or near the outlet for future use. I chose to place it on the cover plate (blacked out in my photo) so I wouldnât have to disassemble everything to scan the code. I hope it doesnât peel off before I need it next time. Finally, I encountered a third issue with WiFi connectivity. This device only works with 2.4GHz networks. For this reason, it initially failed to connect because my phone was connected to my 5GHz network. Rather than scan for nearby WiFi networks, the smart plug tried to copy the phoneâs connection setting and failed. I had to switch my phone to the 2.4GHz during installation then once I was done, switch my phone back to the 5GHz network.Once installed, the outlets worked well. I could easily toggle the power on/off for each outlet. The small LED in the outletsâ associated buttons let me know which outlets were on. The screw-less cover plate included with the kit wasnât my style, so I swapped it out with a standard white Decora plate I got at the hardware store. Conclusion: This smart outlet with two independent switches is going to work great for my shopâs temperature control devices. I can automate them based on room temperature and my presence. I deducted one star for the issues I had with the screws as well as the fact that it insisted on needing a QR code that can easily be lost.Pros:* Provides a clean looking, dual, smart enabled set of outlets that can be controlled independently.* Works with Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa.Cons:* The design of the conductor terminals means the screws can fall out when loosening.* It requires a small, easily misplaced QR code to complete SmartThings setup.* Works only with 2.4GHz WiFi networks. My rating system:âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ – Exceptional – The product performed all of its claimed functions, and possibly more, without any issues.âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ – Good – The product performed all of its claimed functions with minor issues.âï¸ âï¸ âï¸ – Fair – The product performed all of its claimed functions, but there were larger issues.âï¸ âï¸ – Weak – The product performed some, but not all, of its claimed functions and/or there were substantial issues.âï¸ – Poor – The product did not perform any off its claimed functions or there were issues so substantial that it not function at all.

Easily connects to SmartThings
This TP-Link smart outlet easily connected to my SmartThings hub. It came with instructions, but was easy to install without them. You will need the QR code sticker it comes with to add it to SmartThings, so donât throw that out.In SmartThings, you can turn on/off each outlet separately, set timers, run routines, etc., BUT you cannot see the power consumption as others have mentioned. You CAN see the power consumption is the TP-Link Tapo app. You do not âneedâ both apps for this to work. I initially installed this to SmartThings. I just installed the outlet, flipped the breaker on, opened the SmartThings app and hit the + on the top right corner. Select add device, then click âadd partner deviceâ where it says âMatterâ. It opened the camera, I scanned the QR code on the sticker that was included and followed a couple of prompts and named it. Thatâs it, about 15 minutes to install it/replace existing receptacle, and maybe 3 minutes to add it to SmartThings. After I added it to SmartThings, I then downloaded and setup the TP-Link Tapo app. I created a login there and then used that login to link it to SmartThings. By doing this, it shows double on my SmartThings app, and I ended up removing the double listed outlet 1&2 from there. This was really just me creating extra work for myself. You donât need to do all of this. You can either add it straight to SmartThings, but if you do want the power consumption, you will need the TP link, so if thatâs the case, just setup TP link and then link to it in the SmartThings app. One or the other, you donât need to do both. Iâm only linking to SmartThings because I do run routines with other things that are connected there and I also have my google home linked to it for voice control.
